![]() A Florida native, Mary Ellen Christou has been an avid gardener for 35 years. When she began, there was not much information available on gardening specifically in the microclimate of sub-tropical South Florida. She relied on local experts, an article here or there, and a whole lot of experimentation. She learned that annuals were a ton of work and prone to failure without constant attention in the heat. This led her to look towards perennials which can double as ornamentals and food sources. She dug deeper and began experimenting with permaculture and food forests to attain a sustainable garden in line with her ideals of sustainability. Interest in the native plants and herbs led her to study the local ecosystems and work to create a haven for pollinators, the insects and birds she loves so much. A turn in her health and the emergence of migraines led her further to perennial and forest gardening as she sought a way to continue her passion without the time and labor annuals require. And she started to share that knowledge with others. When Mary is not gardening, she can be found spending time with her family and loving husband of nearly 40 years, petting the neighbor’s cats, creating one of a kind wire jewelry and other art pieces, and visiting botanical gardens for inspiration and the sheer love of plants. Recently my friend offered to share her family recipe for baking ginger mollasses cookies together, it brought a rush of connection to my warm gentle Nana as a little girl, who always had ginger molasses cookies & saltine crackers waiting for me upon visiting. I felt safe there, loved & a peaceful listening ear of my Nana, alongside her little teacup poodle "Boogie" who watched over her. The music may be Blue Danube Waltz in the background, she always had time for me....Nana you hold a special place in my heart.
So from all Nanas, Gramma, Grandmothers & any other nickname one may carry, as we have found memories of yesteryear, a candle is sent ahead to share a loving hug & kiss from here, now & then to bridge the generations. 3/4 cup butter softened 1 cup light brown sugar 1 egg well beaten 1/4 cup molasses 2 1/4 cup flour 2 tsp each baking soda, cinnamon, & ground ginger 3/4 tsp ground cloves 1/4 tsp salt 2 tbsp white sugar Directions; Cream together butter & brown sugar, add eggs & molasses, add remaining ingredients except white sugar. Mix well wrap dough to chill and create balls, dip/roll in white sugar, place on baking sheet 3 in apart. 375 bake oven.
